How to make hempcrete



Hempcrete is a sustainable building material made from the woody core fibers of the hemp plant, combined with a lime-based binder. It is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional concrete and offers excellent insulation properties. Here’s a detailed procedure for making hempcrete:

Materials and Tools:

Hemp shivs (core fibers): These are the inner woody core of the hemp plant. They should be processed and sieved to remove dust and other impurities.

Lime binder: Choose a high-quality, breathable, and hydraulic lime binder suitable for hempcrete.

Water: Clean, potable water.

Mixing equipment: Large tub or concrete mixer for mixing the ingredients.

Molds or formwork: Used to shape and contain the hempcrete during pouring and curing.

Tamping tools: Wooden or metal tampers for compressing the hempcrete within the molds.

Mixing the Ingredients:

Measure the required quantities of hemp shivs and lime binder according to your desired mix proportions. The typical ratio is around 3 parts hemp shivs to 1 part lime binder by volume, but it can vary depending on the application and local building codes.

Place the hemp shivs in the mixing tub or concrete mixer.

Gradually add the lime binder while continuously mixing the two materials together. Ensure even distribution and thorough blending of the hemp shivs and lime binder.

Slowly add water to the mixture while continuing to mix. The amount of water needed may vary, but aim for a consistency that allows the mixture to hold together when squeezed without excessive moisture.

Mixing Techniques:

If using a tub, mix the hemp shivs and lime binder with a shovel or mixing tool until they are well combined.

If using a concrete mixer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper mixing time and speed. Typically, a few minutes of mixing is sufficient to achieve a homogenous mixture.

Forming and Pouring:

Prepare the molds or formwork by coating the inside surfaces with a release agent to prevent sticking.

Transfer the mixed hempcrete into the molds, layer by layer, using tamping tools to compress each layer firmly. Compact the hempcrete to eliminate voids and ensure good adhesion.

Continue adding and tamping the hempcrete until the molds are completely filled. Pay attention to corners and edges to ensure proper consolidation.

Curing and Drying:

Allow the hempcrete to cure and dry in the molds for at least 24 to 48 hours, depending on the environmental conditions.

After the initial curing period, carefully remove the molds or formwork to expose the hempcrete walls or structures.

Let the hempcrete dry naturally in a well-ventilated area for several weeks to allow for further curing and moisture evaporation.
